Everybody Loves Lucy | Luckiest Productions and Hayes Theatre CoA short musical venture into the life and times of Lucille Ball Everybody Loves Lucy, is playing for a limited time in the Hayes Theatre.

The 60 minute cabaret explores the life of Ball from the time she left RKO, through the success of I Love Lucy, until the last episode was broadcast on television. The set and cast was minimal, however, the emotions ranged widely from laughter to a profound sadness.

A piano sits on side stage and a dressing room table in front, with a lounge room couch towards the right of stage that frame reoccurring scenes. The minimalism reinforces the focus on the two cast members, an excellent decision by Director, Helen Dallimore, who brought this idea to life on the stage. Amongst other roles, Nigel Ubrihien embodied the character of Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball’s husband. His comic timing was spot on and really showed off his musical talents on the piano too. He was funny and loveable, contributing vital parts of Ball’s life which added depth and realism, especially when the times started to get tough. Ubrihien was a great support to McCann, but still held his own on the stage.

Elise McCann’s performance was larger than life, really capturing the woman behind the character. She beamed on the stage, face glowing, as she frantically dashed to and fro to become Lucille Ball. McCann showcased her talents as an actress, singer, and even dancer, when she donned a tutu for the hilarious bar skit. Her role as Ball was a testament to hardworking women in entertainment, never stopping, and having a real lasting impact.

The musical performances were superb, well-crafted and effortlessly executed. The timing and spacing were really spot on and the little commercial break advertisements for cigarettes and wonder tonics really had the audience in stitches. You know that you have found something wonderful in a performance that can make you laugh and cry.

Everybody Loves Lucy is a short and sweet foray into the world of Lucille Ball, accompanied by all of its glorious ups and downs. Lucy fans will rejoice and have their love and interest in this woman rekindled as they discuss her rollercoaster journey on the way out of the theatre.
